In 1995 I started to write a novel based in the year 2095 when I imagined that cars could drive themselves; road surfaces could be 'smart' reacting to conditions; shopping trolley contents could be scanned and automatically paid for with no need for each item to be removed first; electricity could be generated in a web of solar turbines surrounding the earth in near outer space; the majority of the world population (much depleted by disasters and religious wars) would live on the 'being born benefit'; all illnesses could be cured but, to stop the planet becoming over-populated, the age of 110 was the cut-off point when treatment was withheld and the pleasant TPD (Tender Put Down) was enforced; clothes could be made of smart materials and designed by the wearer on a live image of themselves; hair styles also designed on live images of people and then undertaken by laser, etc..
The novel has never been published and there are many more 'inventions' in it than the above. But, many of the things I dreamt up all those years ago are now a reality and the constant wail of 'I thought of that' resonate in our house. However, I know that it is easy to think up ideas but it takes knowledge, dedication and money to put them into practice - which clearly I do not possess, especially the knowledge - oh, and the money.
In the novel, Buckingham Palace is a University - so watch this space!
The only 'invention' I have ever patented is the automatic flood barrier (see next page) but that has never been manufactured.
The means of keeping tags on what is in ones freezer was an idea nearly taken up by two businesses in that field but, in the end, nothing came of it. However, I do use it myself. See photos on Freezer Contents' Record page.
And I cannot be the only person who has need of a plastic drinking-water bottle that is like a hip flask: flat-sided, small enough to put in a handbag or pocket, and re-fillable. I have found a bottle that is the right size (see picture on the last Inventions page) but it has a screw top instead of a flip top and also the plastic may not be safe for drinking water. I have searched the world on the web but have come up with zilch!! If anyone reading this finds one made of safe plastic, please contact me immediately!
